Today’s Writing Prompt Pick of the Week can be used not only for this time (when you sit down to get your writing in for today!) but for the rest of the week and always! Morning Pages is a common term and often has other names like Free Write or your Daily Write, but for this blog’s purpose we’ll stick with Morning Pages. None the less, Morning Pages seeks to advance your creative side and kick your brain into the writing mode and keep you on your feet.
The challenge is to write for 5-10 minutes straight- without stopping or lifting your pen from the paper. Now don’t feel intimidated by this task- every writer may feel that writing non-stop for that amount of time is daunting, but the point is not to write good it is to write continually. IF, however you do these morning pages day after day, your writing good and writing without stopping may merge to create great pieces, and that is a goal worth striving for. For writers that don’t do morning pages every day and if you do hit writers block mid sentence or even after a few, thats okay! KEEP WRITING. If you have to, resort to writing “I don’t know what to say at the moment” and I guarantee you, a creative idea will pop into your mind. For starters, you can start with a single word and write continually about that word in any way, shape, or form.
For example:
Cozy, Horse, Blue, Sweaty, Beautiful, Snow, Clock, Time, Fruit, Baby, Necklace, Smile, etc. The list goes on and on. For now as a good reference see our List of Journal Ideas- that ranges from single words to longer prompts. As you gain more familiarity with morning pages, move from single words to longer challenges.
So, grab your phone, watch, or tick-tock timer and set it for 5 minutes for today. Choose a word and WRITE. Don’t stop. Just write.
Post your response (up to 500 words) in the comments
